Raymond Lyle Utzig

Raymond Lyle Utzig, 89, of Janesville died Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving and caring family. He was born May 4, 1922 at home, 317 N. Terrace, Janesville, the son of William and Eva (Hatton) Utzig. He graduated in 1941 from Janesville High School. He proudly served as a young man with the U.S. Marines from September 1942 to February 1946 and was actively involved in World War II in the South Pacific. He proudly wore his World War II veteran hat but rarely spoke of the gruesome details. He married Vivian Lipke at Cargill United Methodist Church on August 10, 1946. Raymond worked at a variety of occupations over the years. He worked as a machinist at Parker Pen, Fairbanks Morse, Fisher Body and Utzig Body Shop. In 1952, he joined W.R. Arthur & Company Inc. which later became JATCO where he was employed as a truck driver for 32 years. When he retired in 1984 he was presented with a diamond ring which he wore proudly, for 32 years of safe driving.

Raymond spent his summers fishing and his winters deer hunting at his cabin in Hayward, WI. He hunted deer with his sons into his 80’s. Raymond was a member of Cargill United Methodist Church for 72 years and a life-member of the American Legion and Kienow-Hilt V.F.W. Post # 1621. His nickname was the “Candy Man” – he was always handing out tootsie rolls to any nurse, doctor, waitress, clerk or anyone else who was passing by.

Raymond is survived by his wife of 64 years, Vivian Utzig, 3 sons, Ray (Elaine), Randy (Kathy) both of Janesville, Rick of Alex, OK, 3 daughters, Sandra (the late Keith) Tripke, Patricia (Harry) Turner both of Janesville, Pamela Utzig of Charleston, SC. There are also 1o grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Dean, 2 brothers, Frank and Donald and a grandson, Nicholas Turner.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Cargill United Methodist Church, 2000 Wesley Ave., Janesville with Rev. Forrest Wells officiating. Burial will follow in Milton Lawns Memorial Park with military rites by Kienow-Hilt V.F.W. Post # 1621. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The Utzig family is being assisted by Henke-Clarson Funeral Home. www.henkeclarson.com.
